So now Barack Obama, having been bested on a discussion of actual issues at Saddleback, is going to strike back by (1) attacking John McCain for not knowing how many houses he owns and (2) attacking McCain by claiming he is associated with Ralph Reed. As usual, Obama comes off as an habitual liar – - and as a matter of judgment, does he really want to go there?

McCain was asked how many houses he and Cindy McCain own – - not how many houses McCain, himself, period, owns. Not only does John McCain have a nice pile of his own, he is married to a very wealthy woman (I have read estimates of $400,000,000.00). What of anything does Cindy McCain own? He probably doesn’t know, and probably doesn’t all that much care, how many residential structures Cindy owns, or anything else; McCain keeps making it clear that it’s her business. I seriously doubt that when McCain sits down to parlez with, say, the President of France, that the first thing said President of France is going to ask is how many houses McCain and his wife own.

Now, here is exactly what Obama said today, word for word: “Somebody asked John McCain, ‘How many houses do you have?’ and he said, ‘I’m not sure – I’ll have to check with my staff.’ True quote!” Actually, only half true – - Obama misrepresented the question. Of course. The man seems incapable of telling the truth about anything.

Now for the Ralph Reed thing - – in case you have forgotten, or didn’t know, Ralph Reed is a long-time conservative activist whose emblem got tarnished due to his association with Jack Abramoff. According to a FOX News report, Obama is planning to launch an attack against McCain by linking him to Reed, and thus (presumably) to Abramoff. On the face of it, this appears to be serious lead-balloon stuff, but I have to wonder, what are they smoking at Obama HQ? Attacking McCain due to an association with Ralph Reed (and many folks still approve of Reed, despite his association with Abramoff) opens the door to re-examining all of Barack Obama’s far more troubling, longstanding, and provable personal associations with William Ayers and Rev. Jeremiah Wright and Tony Rezko and the like.

Obama’s past associations had been turning into old news and sliding below the radar in most media outlets. And drifting out of public attention. Now, with the stupid move of attacking McCain on the basis of Ralph Reed, Obama himself will put all of this back in the spotlight.

What can I say, but . . . bring it! You’re making Sean Hannity and Rush Limbaugh and Ann Coulter very happy!

So I’m revising my estimate of Obama’s IQ down a couple of points.

Now, why this line of attack? Easy – - the Obama camp believes its own press, i.e., the MSM take that Obama’s recent slide in the polls was a result of negative campaigning by McCain. While that may have had something to do with it, the underlying reason, in this writer’s humble opinion, is that the public is becoming educated as to Barack Obama’s real positions on the actual issues.

No amount of smokescreening will make the Obama baby-killer abortion rights votes from the Illinois legislature go away.

No amount of cat-calling and snide-remarking will disguise the huge, ruinous prospect of Obama’s taxation and spending plans.

And if he wants to re-ignite the discussion about his “God damn America” preacher/friend/mentor – - who am I to complain?
