Following John McCain’s announcement that he had chosen Gov. Sarah Palin of Alaska to be the Republican Vice-presidential candidate, the Democratic Party has degenerated into an orgy of character assassination, mudslinging, slander, and slimy innuendos.  Yes, the Democratic Smear Machine has gone into full attack.  The effort has permeated every level of the Democratic Party and its allies, with salvos being fired everywhere from the Obama campaign headquarters to MSNBC to the vile depths of the Huffington Post.  See, for examples, Barack’s Buzzkill (e.g.: “the WaPo’s Gene Weingarten . . . moderated a discussion on ‘Sarah Palin: Disastrous stumble or monstrous gaffe?‘”).

I don’t want to hear one more word from any Democrat about “Swiftboating.” Everything that the Democrats have said this year on that subject has now been revealed for what it is: rank, self-serving hypocrisy.

While the display of bickering, cat-calling, snide remarks and personal attacks has its enlightening moments, and its humorous ones – - for example, the claim that the Governor of Alaska has less experience than someone has has never held executive office, followed quickly by the claim that Obama is qualified to be President because he has been running for the job for two years – - it has transformed the present election into a mud-slinging contest.  Okay, Obamatrons, get ready to duck.

My primary objection to Barack Obama is, and always has been, that the man is a pathological liar. There is nothing he won’t say to win election to the next office he seeks.

As Bill Clinton observed back in February, the Obama campaign is fabricated out of smoke and mirrors. The candidate himself is a construct, a product of his own imagination.  He is also a seriously narcissistic person, someone who cannot take criticism, cannot admit he has erred. Ever.  And the Obama campaign has been marked by a series of lies and deceptions.  Let’s look at some examples, shall we?

Item: Let’s begin with some recent stuff.  After he was bested at the Saddleback Forum, Obama, his narcissistic ego bruised, lashed out with the false accusation that John McCain had been asked how many houses he owned and said he didn’t remember.  That was a lie; see The “How Many Houses” and Ralph Reed Attacks: Bring It, Barack and No, Barack Obama, I Won’t Help You Tell Those Lies.

Item: Shortly thereafter, an independent conservative organization, not affiliated with the McCain campaign, put out an ad about Obama’s connection with radical bomber William Ayers.  Obama responded by falsely accusing McCain of being responsible for the ad.  See Obama’s Lies: Another Attempt To Smear McCain and Obama’s Lies: The “Shadowy Front Group” Video He Doesn’t Want You To See.

Item: The matter of Rev. Jeremiah Wright.  Like other Obama associations, the Wright matter is important both for the fact of the relationship as such and for Barack Obama’s reaction to the controversy it caused. Now, the likely explanation for the relationship seems to be simple: Obama attended Trinity United and pursued a relationship with Rev. Wright to gain credibility with Chicago’s black community. Obviously this is an explanation which Obama cannot give because it is patently inconsistent the image of himself which Obama likes to project.  However, Obama cultivated a friendship with Wright for two decades and knew very well of Wright’s outrageous, anti-American sermonizing – - but when Trinity United’s own DVD containing excerpts from Wright’s sermons drew national attention, Obama lied about his relationship with his pastor and tried to claim that these were snippets culled from many years of sermons, implying that they were not representative, and that he had not heard them before.  Nonsense.

The Rev. Jeremiah Wright who spoke at the National Press Club in May was the same man shown in the video clips and the same man who preached on Sundays at Trinity United for the whole 20 years of Obama’s attendance.  The video clips of Wright’s sermons were not unrepresentative bits picked out by the press; they were chosen by members of Trinity United (including, in all likelihood, Rev. Wright) and recorded on a DVD issued by the church precisely because they portray accurately Rev. Wright’s style and message.

There simply is no reasonable possibility that Barack Obama attended Trinity United for 20 years without knowing in detail of Rev. Wright’s philosophy and message. Corroboration for this conclusion exists. When some of Rev. Wright’s statements were reported in print in 2007, Obama promptly removed Wright from his position as an adviser. The only reasonable explanation for this action is that Obama knew of Wright’s philosophy and was familiar with his sermons – - and thus realized that public exposure would damage the candidate’s image.

When Obama later disowned Wright, he claimed that the Reverend was not the same man he had known before.  Wright, to his credit, had been very diplomatic when he called Obama a liar, saying  that Obama was a “politician” and therefore would “say what politicians say.”

Item: When the William Ayers controversy emerged, Obama again misrepresented the relationship, tossing off Ayers as someone who lived in the same neighborhood as the Obamas and whose kids had attended school with Obama’s children. Once again, further revelations showed this to be nonsense. Obama cultivated a relationship with Ayers over a long period of time and used that relationship to further his political career by, among other things, having a campaign kickoff event at Ayers’ home. The Ayers matter is coming back into the public eye with the release of documents which the Obama campaign wants to suppress.

There is, of course, more – - the Tony Rezko matter, for one; the use of race-carding and threats of criminal prosecution to silence critics of the Obama campaign. But there is an aspect to all this of overriding importance.  Barack Obama’s arrogant, narcissistic pride prevents him from admitting that he has erred.  He made it clear on his trip to Iraq that he absolutely will not acknowledge that he was wrong about the Surge.  Obama simply cannot be trusted to make important judgments – - including judgments about national security matters – - when his ego is on the line. See Obama On Iraq: Two Wrongs Don’t Make A Right.
